Too old, but do I care?
Continuing along the line of ageism; now in my late 50’s I am still sought after and have a huge pick of schools to choose from. My working hours number 15 per week, (20 x 45 minutes), with no extra activities, no summer camps, no exam preparation or standing outside the school gates in the morning and waving at the parents and feeling like the proverbial buffalo! I have a total of one lesson plan per week adapted to the strengths and abilities of each class across a single grade.
I teach conversation only (although I personally include grammar by choice) and for this I receive the equivalent of 50,000 baht a month and have everything free - food, accommodation, electric . . . . . and a flight payment of 40,000 baht once per year. I receive three months holiday a year, split into two six-week periods, both paid at 60%, as well as (paid) national holidays. Above all and equally importantly, I give my best and am genuinely appreciated!
My educational qualifications are two degrees and an M.A, plus TEFL and evidence of a clean criminal record. Where am I? Northern China!
Now, when Thailand is able to match the above, or even show some appreciation for its 30k and 10-month contracts and a lifetime of knowledge, that’s when I’ll return and until then it can keep its happy and smiling young backpackers!
