Diary of a Thai football season

2024/2025 Fixtures

Can a squad of young players bring a run of three relegation (or near-relegation) seasons to an end?

(All fixtures are Thai League 2 unless stated)

Sat 10th August

Mahasarakham SBT 2-0 Samut Prakan (attendance: 1,644)

A threadbare Samut Prakan squad of just 13 eligible players fought bravely but fell to an opening weekend defeat in a game low on quality and goalmouth incident. A goal in each half for The Purple Crabs did the damage on what was an unbearably humid evening.

Sun 18th August

Samut Prakan 3-2 Trat FC (attendance: 349)

Fans were treated to a five goal-thriller at the Latkrabang 54 Stadium, Samut Prakan's new home ground for the season. Narongrit Kamnet's terrific injury time winner capped an incredible second half team performance and sealed victory for the home side after Trat FC looked to have rescued a point with a 90th minute equaliser from Phillerson.

Sat 24th August

Chonburi 1-0 Samut Prakan (attendance: 4,459)

Samut Prakan made the short journey south to take on the league leaders and title favourites Chonburi. After an even first half in which the visitors probably had the better chances, the Sharks moved up a gear in the second period and a 64th minute goal from Derley proved to be enough to settle the contest. This was something of a free hit for Samut Prakan though.

Sun 1st September

Samut Prakan 0-0 Chainat Hornbill (attendance: 489)

A forgettable goalless draw with neither side deserving three points, but thankfully the rain kept off until just after the final whistle. The attendance of 489 was a significant and encouraging improvement on the first home game.

Wed 11th September (FA Cup)

Surin KCM FC 2-0 Samut Prakan (attendance: 150)

Samut Prakan travelled to the north-east and crashed out of the FA Cup competition at the first hurdle, beaten 2-0 at third division Surin KMC on a difficult pitch. They can have no complaints though; Surin had a perfectly good goal chalked off for offside in the first half, and hit the woodwork several times in the second. A disappointing display from a fairly strong Samut Prakan starting eleven.

Sat 14th September

Nakhonsri United 1-1 Samut Prakan (attendance: 726)

A combination of poor finishing from the home side and the odd slice of luck resulted in Samut Prakan snatching an unlikely point down in the deep south. Nonthaphut's sidefooted shot on four minutes put the visitors in front, with Nakhonsi finally breaking Samut Prakan's defensive rearguard seven minutes from time.

Sun 22nd September

Samut Prakan 2-2 Police Tero (attendance: 462)

Police Tero, two goals up at half-time and cruising to victory, will be kicking themselves for not going home with all three points. Bubba Abbo's close range header on 73 minutes gave Samut Prakan a lifeline, before Korean midfielder Jeong Jinyeong scored with the final kick of the match. It was probably an undeserved point, but an impressive and spirited comeback nonetheless.

Sat 28th September

Kasetsart FC 2-1 Samut Prakan (attendance: 968)

Samut Prakan dropped further towards the relegation zone after losing at Kasetsart FC. A poor playing surface meant it was all about which team would adapt better to the conditions, and although Prakan managed to keep danger man Steven Langil relatively quiet, Kasetsart's all-round play was better. That's now four trips to the Insee Chantarasatit Stadium without a win.

Wed 2nd October (Revo League Cup)

Prime Bangkok 1-2 Samut Prakan (attendance: 269)

Panudech Maiwong made a welcome start in midfield after virtually a year out of the team due to injury. He went on to score one of the goals that put Samut Prakan in the hat for the next round, and a seriously potential banana skin was avoided.

Sat 5th October

Samut Prakan 1-0 Suphanburi (attendance: 371)

Samut Prakan registered their second win of the season against bottom-of-the-table Suphanburi. A goal midway through the second half from Nonthaphut settled the contest, but on chances created, the winning margin should have been higher. Suphanburi look doomed.

Sun 20th October

Chantaburi 3-2 Samut Prakan (attendance: 604)

A brace from Pongrawit Jantarong helped secure three points for The Rabbits on a wretched, rainy night in Eastern Thailand, and a defeat that sees Samut Prakan slide into the bottom three. Two well-taken goals from Bouba Abbo and Sebastian Scaroni at least gave the small group of away fans something to cheer.

Sat 26th October

Samut Prakan 0-0 Pattaya United (attendance: 497)

Honours even in the 'grudge derby' with both goalkeepers on top and thwarting what few chances were created. Samut Prakan hit the woodwork twice but a draw was a fair result. Unfortunately, draws won't keep us up.

Wednesday 30th October (Revo League Cup)

Samut Prakan 1-2 Nakhon Pathom FC (attendance: 175)

After a stressful few days for both fans and club management, Samut Prakan had a glorious chance to advance in the Revo League Cup against a seriously 'second string' Nakhon Pathom. Alas, it wasn't to be and another tepid performance ended our interest in the competition.

Sat 2nd November

Samut Prakan 2-2 Kanchanburi Power (attendance: 423)

A decent point against one of the second division's in-form sides and most miserly defences. Bouba Abbo with a late equaliser once again proved that if you can give him the service, he will score you goals. Why is he not the first name on the team sheet?

Sun 10th November

Ayutthaya United 1-0 Samut Prakan (attendance: 535)

A goal mid-way through the second half from Caique seperated the two sides at the Ayutthaya Provincial Stadium. The result saw Ayutthaya move into second place in T2. Panudech Maiwong not only started the game for Samut Prakan but took the captain's armband.

Sat 23rd November

Samut Prakan 2-3 Lampang (attendance: 381)

An extremely enjoyable and entertaining contest with some super goals from both sides. Samut Prakan gave their all but as often happens, it was the quality of the opposition's foreign players that made the difference.
