Enthusiasm rubs off on students

Hi all. Been teaching in Thailand many years. No more M1 classrooms with 60 boys though. I'm now at a university and teaching poetry, English and American Literature. I really like those subjects. I read a lot and praise students that read themselves. The kids know if you like your subject or are just going through the motions. Everyone of the students wants to be the class clown and get laughter. Poetry is a way to do this. I have found the Thai male students are better at poetry than female students, especially limericks and haiku. It is very difficult at first because those courses are mandatory subjects, but just get students to laugh on the first day and you have them. Not only that, but you can increase their vocabulary tremendously without really trying. Lesson plans usually don't work, you have to go with the flow.
