Diary of a Thai football season

(2020/21) Pre-season friendlies

Who are Samut Prakan City warming up against?

This page is for reports and news, etc on Samut Prakan's pre-season friendly games.

16th Jan Samut Prakan City v Taichung Futuro F.C (Kiartithanee Football Camp)

Taichung Futuro are a team based in Taichung, Taiwan and play in the Taiwanese Premier League, which consists of just 8 teams. In fact, there are plans to reduce the division to just six teams in 2020. Taiwanese football is clearly flourishing. The game will take place at one of Samut Prakan City's training grounds - the-bloody-difficult-to-get-to Kiartithanee Football Camp. I'll certainly be giving this one a miss!

Final score update: Samut Prakan City 4 Taichung Futuro 0. A decent run out with all four goals coming in the second half. New signing, Matee Sarakum, scored twice.

24th Jan Samut Prakan City v Nagoya Grampus (Pattana Sport Club)

Nagoya Grampus play in the Japanese Premier League (J1) but have hardly set it alight, finishing 15th and 13th in the two seasons since they were promoted from J2 in 2017. Pub quiz question - which English football superstar had a spell with them in the 1990's? Answer: Gary Lineker. The game will take place at the Pattana Sport Club, which I've never heard of. Sorry, no interest in this one either.

Final score update: Samut Prakan 1 Nagoya Grampus 0. A 32nd minute goal by new striker, Pedro Junior, separated the two sides. Let's hope it's the first of many.

1st Feb Samut Prakan City v Reno Yamaguchi (SAT Stadium)

We were down to play away at fellow Premier League side, Police Tero, in our third warm-up game but when the fixture list came out, they became our second away match of the season, so it obviously wasn't a great idea to play them twice in such a short space of time. Therefore, Samut Prakan have arranged a match against Japanese second division side, Reno Yamaguchi, who finished 15th last season in a division of 22 teams. Not particularly attractive opposition but kick off 4.30 pm at the Samut Prakan Stadium. Definitely a game we should win comfortably.

Final score update: Samut Prakan 2 Reno Yamaguchi 0.  A first half of few chances followed by a much more open second half, with virtually the whole squad playing at least half an hour.  There were some good performances from the new signings, especially Spanish-Thai left back Ernesto Phumipha and Nattapon Malapun. There is going to be some healthy competition for places in that defence this season.
