Eight Days in Korea (part three)

New Year spent in a freezing cold Seoul. But what a joy!

My wife and I recently spent eight days in Seoul, Korea over the New Year period. Here is perhaps an 'alternative' and quirky overview of all that we experienced in the city and what went in to making it one of our best trips ever.

Oppan Gangnam style!

Why I just can't get this song and dance craze out of my head

Gangnam Style is a K-Pop phenomenon performed by Korean artist PSY. The song parodies the lifestyle of the elite Gangnam neighborhood in Seoul, South Korea. Criticism of the materialism of this wealthy neighborhood is apparent as PSY reduces luxury to laughs.

Thailand vs Korea

Which country offers more for the English teacher?

Living and teaching in both laid back Thailand and fast paced South Korea has made for an interesting perspective on life in Asia. The two extremes are hard to compare but I think I should at least try.

Determine your own significance

The true value of an English teacher

Native English teachers incompetent in the classroom? Of course they're incompetent. Many of them, anyway. Then again, many of the Korean English teachers are incompetent as well.

A philosophical dilemma

Should getting a job be given precedence over pursuit of social justice?

I guess the more conservative the society in general, the more left-wingers there are that originate from it that are not in fact left-wingers at all, but who are in fact right-wingers masequerading as left-wingers to make themselves look good.

Not in my classroom

Dopey foreigners and mentally deficient Koreans

It's not that I love to discipline students. I don't. But it is part of my job and I accept that. I have precious little time as it is to teach my students the English they need to know, so I would rather not waste class time telling students to sit down, keep quiet, and stop throwing things.

The perfect storm

Dopey foreigners and mentally deficient Koreans part one

So Korea, go ahead and continue to hire unqualified native English teachers. You know exactly what you're doing. You're hardly walking and talking testaments to your own good judgement. A plague on all your houses!

Agreeing with Alison Empey

The downsides of teaching in Korea

What exactly is it that I don’t like about Korea, or that made me finally spit the dummy? In as objective tone as I can muster, and in no partcular order, here’s the nature of my gripes.
